Report from local press:

Outstanding school wins praise.

A Ramsey school which encourages pupils to think for themselves has been singled out for special praise.

Ramsey Spinning Infants school is one of only five in the country highlighted by Ofsted following an outstanding performance in an Ofsted inspection.

Headteacher Diana Cooling said "We are very pleased that Ofsted judges our school's ethos to be outstanding.

"This combined with a rich and varied curriculum, ensures all children achieve success. We constantly challenge all our pupils and spend a great deal of time encouraging them to take responsibility, express ideas and clarify their thoughts."She added "this helps develop vocabulary which impacts on their achievements over the whole of the curriculum.

The Ramsey School was one of 457 outstanding schools and colleges across England praised by David Bell, the chief inspector of schools.

Ramsey school rated highly

Spinning Infant School in Ramsey is an outstandingly effective school, where standards are often exceptionally high, according to Government inspectors.

An inspector from Ofsted - the Office for Standards in Education - said teaching was excellent and leadership was exceptional at all levels. She also said children's behaviour was exemplary.

Acting headteacher Patsy Barrett said: "Although we are ecstatic about our success, we are not complacent and know that we can continue to provide our children in Ramsey with the very best education possible.

"Praise must also go to our parents and children, who are absolutely brilliant. It's a real privilege to work with such supportive people."

Teaching at the school, which is on the corner of the High Street and School Lane, was partly rated so highly because lessons were planned very carefully.

Lead inspector Joanne Harvey said: "Teachers promote high levels of confidence and positive attitudes through excellent and trusting relationships, ensuring pupils work hard.

"The outstanding curriculum ensures learning is active and inclusive. Pupils particularly enjoy exploring topic themes through the visual arts, in which they achieve very high standards."

The 162 pupils aged between 4 and 7 were highlighted for their outstanding personal development. She said: "Behaviour is exemplary so that not a moment is lost maintaining discipline in lessons or around the school."

Only one area was identified for key action and that was to extend partnership work in order to develop the school as the centre of a learning community.
